While I may be a minimalist when it comes to makeup, I'm always open to learning new tips and tricks to develop my everyday beauty look.
Last week, I had the pleasure of getting a makeup session at Own Your Wonder located in Georgetown. We focused on the best eye makeup for glasses wearers, like myself.
Own Your Wonder is a full service makeup bar that is for all skin tones, styles, and gender identities. If we can just drop into any hair and nail salons to get a quick service, Own Your Wonder wants to provide the same with makeup. It has a la carte services and also offers monthly memberships. The founder is Kristina Han, who is a lawyer by trade but her passion is providing accessible and affordable makeup services to the DC area woman. And that's how Own Your Wonder was born!

I asked Kristina some questions in various of topics including - What is one makeup product DC women can't live without? (Answers: mascara, concealer, brows in that order); What are the DC area's favorite daytime and nighttime looks? (Answers: daytime - 'no makeup' makeup, nighttime - smoky eyes); What's one makeup trick their customers wish they could do better at home? (Answers: smoky eyes and contouring); and so on. Emma, Own Your Wonder's Chief of Staff, also chimed in to answer with her thoughts. Overall, it was a great conversation.
For my session, I was given the Total Wonder, which is full face including strip lashes. Despite it being full face, the final result was an everyday look with an emphasis on the best eye makeup for glasses wearers aka Team Four Eyes!
My makeup artist, Alexandria, was attentive, patient, and above all, so friendly. We have a few things in common, like having the purple Galaxy Note 9 phones, but I also learned that she's been a makeup artist for almost 6 years and has been with Own Your Wonder for roughly four months.
Okay, now that's out of the way, let's break down the makeup process starting with the eyes.
For strip lashes, there was a brief consultation involving what would be the right length for glasses wearers. We decided on shorter to mid length. It might appear long to the naked eye but once applied, it's a natural fit. And the lashes won't graze up against the lenses. Strip lashes can last between 18-24 hours. When it's time to remove, the lashes will lift from the outer corner. Get a hold of it and gently peel off.
Eye makeup:
- eye primer
- concealer
- MAC Eyeshadow in Saddle - Applying gold eyeshadow gives the subtle pop of color that'll shine through the glasses. Bronzer is also a great substitute. I usually use Colourpop Super Shock Highlighter in gold tones.
- brown mascara
- black eyeliner - Again, she used the color because of my outfit. Brown eyeliner is more ideal for that 'no makeup' makeup look.
Let's move on to the face and lips.
Face makeup. Alexandria wanted to focus on showing my natural highlights through the makeup:
And for the final reveal...
- moisturizer with SPF 30
- face primer
- MAC Lightful C tinted moisturizer in Dark Plus for the T-zone and Dark Deep for elsewhere
- shimmer highlight
- no contour - Remember, everyday look.
- Kat Von D Lock It Translucent Powder
- MAC lip liner
- MAC lipstick - Red was chosen for outfit reasons but nude lipstick with brown lip liner is the best combo for the 'no makeup' makeup look.
And for the final reveal...
I am feeling myself...feeling myself...feeling my.
No, but really. Alexandria did her thang! I looked flawless. Or as the kids these days would say, unclockable. The makeup was fully done but felt weightless and most importantly, looked natural with some added oomph. She may have literally talked me through the whole process, step by freakin' step, while she was doing my makeup but I still feel like I need a bit more training.
