In this year of 2018, I want to take better care of my skin. Usually when it comes to beauty, I'm more in tune with makeup (very much obsessed with makeup tutorials on YouTube, by the way), nails, and hair. But my actual skin? Facials and exfoliation and chemical peels and masks? It's pretty much ignored.
My current skin care products are as follows:
- Shea Moisture African Black Soap
- St. Ives Blackhead Clearing Green Tea Scrub
- Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner
- Neutrogena Oil Free Moisture with Sunscreen
- a pinch of Tree Tea Oil on those problematic pimples
- Nip + Fab Glycolic Fix Night Pads
Not much of a product hoarder but looking at this very short list I feel like more should be added, no? I don't know. Until I figure it out, I decided to start this month off with a good ol' facial to deal with my long suffering ordeal with hyperpigmentation. I always joke to myself that I have natural dark highlight on the sides of my face. I joke to keep from crying.
I kid or not.
Off to Skin Beauty Bar, I go.
The boutique day spa is located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, right next door to District Donuts. After walking up a short flight of steps, you'll enter an open floor area with some pretty good lighting thanks to the large windows. The quaint lobby area houses stylish couches, a flat screen tv and the latest magazines to keep you occupied while waiting on your appointment. If hungry, grab a couple of chocolates from the mini stand. And, of course, water and wine are provided.

My facial was done by the owner of Skin Beauty Bar, Meka Mathis. Meka has this warm energy that makes one feel right at home. She's extremely nice and very experienced given that she's been in the skin care industry for more than 20 years.
Meka asked the right questions and gave me wonderful skin care advice. After our consultation, she chose the Skin Beauty Custom Facial to start the process of battling my hyperpigmentation. I appreciated that with each step of the treatment, she explained what she was about to do and the type of ingredients used. I even liked the extra perk of the hand massage with warm mitts. It all felt so relaxing. The whole process clocked in at 50 minutes.
I plan on continuing this service. It's recommended to do a facial every six weeks so if you guys don't see an update post by March, hold me accountable!

I would highly recommend this place. It should be noted that it's an appointment only spa; no walk-ins. I personally think this is ideal because it means the licensed esthetician can truly focus on your needs without feeling rushed. Besides facials, Skin Beauty Bar also offers waxing and sugaring, tanning, body scrubs, massages, eyelashes, and so much more. Check out their website for more information.
So when you do decide to book that appointment, tell 'em Vivi sent you.
