Happy New Year, folks!
And with this new year brings forth the first post of the year.
Welcome, Golden Globes 2017.
*long post alert
As per usual, many consider the Golden Globes as the official start of awards season. The party show was hosted by Jimmy Fallon. Didn't catch the opening number/video but throughout the night he was hardly visible. The show really should've been hosted by the Kristin Wiig and Steve Carrell who almost stole the show with their hilarious bit of when they saw their first animated film (the duo was there to present the Best Animated Film award). Their stories brought about painful memories which they made very hilarious with their superb comedic timing. It also made me realize that Steve never won an award for his work in The Office. How rude. Other highlights:
- Donald Glover, two-time winner that night winning Best Performance by an Actor, Musical or Comedy and Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy for Atlanta, thanked Migos for creating Bad and Boujee and thanking his Nigerian crew. Granted, I don't know who Donald's Nigerian crew is but hearing my country getting some kind of shoutout made me proud.
- Oh and there was Questlove giving us all kinds of jams to groove to including Rae Sremmurd's Black Beatles. It took me a split second to remember that The Roots is the in house band for The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon...Jimmy was the host...and he brought along Questlove...leader of The Roots. Full circle.
- Now, who stole the show? Well, Meryl Streep. Accepting the Cecil B. Demille award, Meryl gave a wonderful speech about media, press, and what we can do now to change the narrative. She also slammed that combover dude without even uttering his name. It was pretty funny for me to scan the crowd to see who didn't clap or looked disengaged or appeared uncomfortable when he was briefly addressed in her speech.
- I should also note Viola's beautiful opening introduction of her friendship with Meryl.
Fashion time!
Kristen Bell in Jenny Packham Homegirl came to slay, as the folks would say. Photos doesn't do this dress any justice. It shined so much onscreen. |
Evan Rachel Wood in Altuzarra Bringing all kinds of androgyny to the red carpet. Besides the bow and leather panels, another element I liked was her hairdo. |
Gina Rodriguez in Naeem Khan Oh thank heavens Gina stepped up her red carpet game. She looks radiant in white. Gimme that sparkly fringe evening gown of a dress! Now. |
Issa Rae in Christian Siriano Another radiant in white moment. So happy for Issa and her nomination and her show. Can't believe it's been almost two years since meeting Issa at the Awkward Black Girl book signing. |
Mandy Moore in Naeem Khan While the bodice is pressed wee too tightly against her boobs, Mandy looks amazing. Remember, I'm a sucker for capes. |
Ruth Negga in Louis Vuitton A highly impactful dress. But it's okay. Ruth has done better. |
Viola Davis in Michael Kors Another lady who has done better on the red carpet. Gorgeous canary yellow color that's working so good against her skin. However, it's a standard dress that sparkles. |
Chrissy Metz in Christian Siriano This isn't a bad dress. In fact, it has a vintage flair. Think Dynasty. Rich royal purple, velvety texture, shoulder pads (?). It kinda works. |
Kristen Wiig in Reem Acra Her haircut is amazing. Fits her so well. The dress, unfortunately, is average. Blaming the nude color lining. And the fabric. |
Lily Collins in Zuhair Murad This is the first time seeing an illusion netting that matches the wearer's skin tone to perfection. The skirt portion is doing entirely way too much. LOVE her lipstick. |
Kerry Washington in Dolce & Gabbana I'm convinced she was inspired by Nigerian aso ebi. Thankfully, her hair and makeup saved this entire look. |
Zoe Saldana in Gucci Wowza. I don't understand what's going on in this mess of a dress. Seriously with the bow? And the material looks pretty cheap for a red carpet appearance. |
Sophie Turner in Louis Vuitton Sophie gotta chill. LV gotta chill. This "dress" is laughable. And I know the blonde is for a movie role but I really miss her red hair. |
